  • How to Change Your Skin in Less Than a Week

    10 Noviembre 2014

For most skin issues, time is of the essence. Many treatments and ingredients take weeks to months to really start to work or show improvements. Fortunately there are a few things you can do or use that can help change your skin in a week or less. These simple changes, routines and products will help improve your skin with a fast turnaround time.

    • Remove your makeup every night- no excuses. Let’s be honest- do you always remember to take off your makeup from the day before you head to bed? Chances are there is a night or two when you slack off due to laziness, and those one or two missed nights of cleansing can really take a toll on your skin. To prevent breakouts and keep your pillow clean, use a makeup removing wipe and gentle cleanser before bed. If you can, remove your makeup right after work/any night events, so your skin will have even more time to recover.
    • Eat properly and drink enough water. A few days of eating greasy foods and skimping on water will take a toll on your skin and everyone will know what you’ve been up to. So do a mini detox by eating plenty of health foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts and make sure you are properly hydrated.
    • Use spot treatments for problem areas. By following the steps above, your overall skin will start to look and feel better. But for problem areas, you’ll need to use a strong spot treatment for them. If you have acne or occasional pimples, look for an acne spot treatment that says it will deliver results within a week. For redness or sensitive skin, find a calming moisturizer and avoid and foundation or concealer with harsh ingredients.
  • Why Are Enzymes So Important?

    05 Noviembre 2014

Enzymes are described as a substance produced by a living organism that acts as a catalyst to bring about a specific biochemical reaction. They are chemicals that work to speed up the rate of chemical reactions in biological processes.

Enzymes are chemicals that speed up the rate of chemical reactions without being consumed in the reaction themselves. They’re incredibly useful in biological processes because they can make a reaction that normally requires that dangerously-high temperatures occur at normal body temperatures. In the food industry, enzymes are used to help ripen fruits, tenderize meats and produce things like wine and cheese.

How Are Enzymes Used in Skincare?

Enzymes are used mainly in two processes: anti-inflammation and exfoliation. In exfoliation, enzymes are generally gentler than other scrubs or microdermabrasion procedures. The layers of skin you want to exfoliate (the upper layers) are made of dean skin cells, and the enzymes work to break down that skin protien, which results in smoother and younger-looking skin. Enzymes exfoliate and replenish without feeling like you’re exfoliating- a win-win. Since enzymes are gentle, they work well for all skin types, even sensitive skin.

Enzymes also work to protect skin against oxidative damage (sun, pollution, etc.) You’ll find them in sunscreens, moisturizers, peels and various treatments. Enzymes are said to work to brighten skin as well.

  • Dr. Paul Cohen Highlights Skincare for Cancer Treatment Patients

    04 Noviembre 2014

Dermatologist Dr. Paul Cohen recently stopped by a Canadian morning television show to share tips on how to care for skin during cancer treatments and the do’s and don’ts of taking care of your skin. Among the products he highlighted was Shinso Essence. Below is an overview of all the helpful tips Dr. Cohen touched on during the 5-minute segment.

    • Two of the most common changes in the skin during and after cancer treatments are rashes and sun sensitivity.
    • While you’re undergoing cancer therapy, it’s crucial to soothe, heal and protect your skin.
    • A large concern of those undergoing cancer treatments is dehydration. Patients often ask what the best moisturizer out there is. Look for products with natural moisturizing ingredients, such as oatmeal.
    • Avoid products with fragrance or perfume, since the overpowering scents could cause nausea or make it worse.
    • For itchy skin or rashes, use cortisone cream to soothe the skin.
    • Always apply a sunscreen- look for hypoallergenic versions to avoid any irritations to the skin.
    • Shinso products- especially Essence- are like a “facelift in a bottle”. Dr. Cohen praises the products created by a “Japanese rocket scientist” for their face-lifting properties. All Shinso products are also made without parabens or harsh chemicals.
    • Stay away from any irritants when using makeup or other beauty products.

  • The Importance of Sleep For Your Skin

    27 Octubre 2014

We’re constantly bombarded with lists of things that are good for our skin, such as eating the right foods, using the right products and avoiding certain ingredients. But sometimes one of the most simple factors of good skin is often overlooked: sleep. Sleep is important not just for your health and well-being, but for your skin as well. They call it “beauty sleep” for a reason, right? Here are a few reasons why sleep is important for great skin.

    • It prevents a variety of beauty blunders. If you suffer from dark circles under your eyes, puffy eyelids, bloodshot eyes- just to name a few- it could be because you are not getting enough sleep. Simply sleeping more can reduce these issues with no makeup needed.
    • It can reduce stress. Not getting enough sleep can lead you to become cranky or extra stressed, which not only shows in your personality, but on your face as well. Many women breakout when stressed, which is not a fun thing to go through.
    • It’s free. Unlike expensive spa treatments or that hard-to-find nighttime skincare serum, sleep is free!
    • It lets your skin repair itself. While you sleep, your skin renews itself and repairs. New skin cells grow and replace older cells.
    • It helps to prevent aging and wrinkles. Lack of sleep leads to increased levels of stress hormones in the body. Chronic high levels of stress hormones in the body cause increased inflammation within the skin that subsequently leads to an acceleration of aging and wrinkles. f
  • Does Your Skin Need a Deep Cleansing?

    26 Octubre 2014

There are a variety of facial treatments out there, but which ones do you really need? Something simple like a light exfoliating mask is usually helpful for everyone’s skin, but something like a chemical peel should be reserved only for those with certain skin issues and skin types. This posts focuses on deep cleansing treatments and how to know when/if you need one and what a deep cleansing may entail.

What is a deep cleansing treatment?

A deep cleansing treatment, which may sometimes be referred to as a deep cleansing facial at some spas, is a treatment performed by skincare experts to give your skin a deep cleaning by going beyond the skin’s outermost layers to clean your skin and eliminate blackheads and prevent acne.

How do I know if I need a deep cleansing treatment?

People who could use a deep cleansing treatment include those with very oily or acne-prone skin. If traditional methods of extracting blackheads and dirt don’t work on you (such as exfoliating products or blackhead-eliminating products), then a deep cleansing may be useful. If you have uneven skin texture or color, this treatment could be of great help as well. Be sure to tell the person performing the facial of your skin concerns and skin type so they can cater to your needs.

Why should I get a deep cleansing treatment?

These professional facial treatments get beneath the surface- something which regular products can’t always do. Deep cleansing facials will help kill bacteria beneath your skin, where your everyday cleanser can’t reach. These treatments will give you clearer, brighter and healthier-looking skin.

How can I give myself a deep cleansing treatment?

You can give yourself a simpler version of the spa’s facials with a few products. First off, use a gentle cleanser to wipe away makeup and bacteria and start with a clean slate. Then, exfoliate to get rid of dead skin. Open up your pores with a bowl of steaming hot water and let your face hang over it for 15 minutes. Then, apply a deep cleaning mask by following the directions on the tube/bottle. Remove the mask and apply a light toner to your skin. Add a serum (if needed), eye cream and then a moisturizer.
